How Long Do Sewer Lines Last? Lifespan by Pipe Material

"How long should my sewer line last?" is one of our most-asked questions. The honest answer: it depends entirely on the material — and on what DeSoto County's soil and trees have done to it.

Clay tile: 50–60 years (often less here)

Clay resists corrosion but every joint is a root entry point, and our shifting soil opens those joints. Many Southaven clay laterals fail at 40–50 years.

Cast iron: 50–75 years

Strong but corrodes from the inside out, developing scale, tuberculation, and eventually holes. Homes from the 60s–80s with original cast iron are in the window now.

Orangeburg: 30–50 years

Bituminized fiber pipe from the post-war era deforms and collapses — it is essentially always past due when we find it.

PVC: 75–100+ years

Modern PVC resists corrosion and roots at glued joints. Poor installation (bad bedding, wrong slope) is its main enemy, not age.

HDPE (trenchless): 50–100 years

Fused, jointless, flexible, corrosion-proof — the premium replacement material we install with pipe bursting.

What shortens any line's life

Aggressive tree roots, chronic grease, soil movement, heavy surface loads (parked trucks over shallow lines), and chemical abuse all accelerate failure regardless of material.
